Discover Scuba Diving at the Ad Dimaniyat Islands

A scuba instructor demonstrating underwater skills to two student divers

Breathing underwater for the first time can feel unusual for a few seconds. Then the rhythm settles, the noise of the surface fades and a completely new environment begins to open around you.

Discover Scuba Diving is designed for people who are curious about scuba but are not yet ready to commit to a full certification course. It is a closely supervised introduction, not a licence, and it gives you a genuine sense of what diving feels like.

Start slowly and learn the essentials

The experience begins before the dive. A PADI Professional introduces the equipment, explains the important safety principles and helps you understand how the session will run. You will learn how to breathe through a regulator, communicate with simple hand signals and respond calmly to a few common situations.

Initial practice takes place in shallow, controlled conditions. This gives you time to get comfortable with the equipment and repeat the essential skills without rushing. Your instructor stays close, manages the important safety decisions and adjusts the pace to suit you.

What happens underwater?

Once you are relaxed and the required skills are complete, the experience can progress into an underwater tour. Depending on the programme, conditions and instructor assessment, a Discover Scuba Diving experience may reach a maximum depth of 12 metres.

The goal is not depth. The goal is a calm first experience. Moving slowly gives you time to notice coral formations, reef fish and the way schools of fish move as one. Around the Ad Dimaniyat Islands, a first-time diver may also encounter turtles and other marine life that make the area’s reefs so memorable.

Your instructor remains with you

Direct supervision is central to the experience. Your instructor handles the dive plan, monitors the group, checks comfort and gas, and keeps the session within the required limits. You are encouraged to communicate throughout the dive and can end the experience whenever you need to.

Medical screening is also important. Every participant must complete the required questionnaire, and some answers may require written clearance from a doctor before diving. Tell the dive team about any concerns before the day so there is time to confirm what is needed.

Could this lead to certification?

For many people, Discover Scuba Diving is the moment they decide to become certified. Under current PADI requirements, some completed skills may be credited toward Open Water Diver training when they are performed with a PADI Instructor and properly recorded. Your instructor can explain whether this applies to your programme.

You do not need to become an expert in one day. You only need curiosity, a willingness to listen and enough time to become comfortable. The first breath is the beginning; where the journey goes next is up to you.
